Altar Servers
Altar servers are lay members of a Roman Catholic (RC) church, often children or young people, who assist the priest during the celebration of the Mass and other liturgical services. Their role is to support the smooth and reverent conduct of the liturgy by carrying out specific tasks such as holding the processional cross, lighting and carrying candles, preparing the altar, presenting the bread and wine, and assisting with the Missal (prayer book).
Altar serving is considered both a privilege and a form of ministry, as it allows individuals to participate more closely in the worship of the Church. Servers are expected to show respect, attentiveness, and understanding of the liturgy. Through this role, they often develop a deeper appreciation of the Mass and may feel inspired to continue serving the Church in other ways.
